OpenAI CEO Sam Altman steps down as board loses confidence in his leadership

OpenAI said Friday that Sam Altman is no longer its chief executive, with the ChatGPT parent adding that said Altman had not been “consistently candid in his communications with the board.”

“The board no longer has confidence in his ability to continue leading OpenAI,” the company said in a blog post.

In a tweet Friday, Altman said he “will have more to say about what’s next later.”

Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati was appointed interim CEO, OpenAI said. A search is underway to identify a permanent successor.

The company, which created ChatGPT, said Altman’s departure follows “a deliberative review process” by the board.

“We are grateful for Sam’s many contributions to the founding and growth of OpenAI. At the same time, we believe new leadership is necessary as we move forward,” the board said in a statement.

Murati is “exceptionally qualified to step into the role of interim CEO. We have the utmost confidence in her ability to lead OpenAI during this transition period,” the board said.

an early investor in OpenAI that has been working to embed the artificial-intelligence company’s technology into its products, fell 1.7% after the news of Altman’s exit. The stock dropped a further 0.7% in the extended session Friday.

ChatGPT became a household name late last year after OpenAI made the service available through a research preview, opening the floodgates of companies utilizing or claiming to utilize AI-powered features in their businesses.
