“‘Ultimately, I think he will spend a night or a weekend in jail.’”
That’s Ty Cobb, a former White House lawyer under Donald Trump, on what the former president could be facing if he continues to violate a federal judge’s gag order.
Earlier in October, U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan, who is handling the federal case against Trump that involves charges of election interference in the 2020 presidential race, imposed the order. Then, she reinstated it this past Sunday after a brief pause following an appeal by Trump.
The order stops Trump from making remarks directed at prosecutors, court employees and possible witnesses.
But Trump has continued to speak out. As recently as Sunday, he shared the following on his Truth Social platform about Bill Barr, who served as attorney general during his presidency: “I called Bill Barr Dumb, Weak, Slow Moving, Lethargic, Gutless, and Lazy, a RINO [Republican In Name Only] WHO COULDN’T DO THE JOB.”
Trump’s post came after Barr made comments about Trump’s “limited” verbal skills.
Cobb told CNN’s Erin Burnett on Monday night that Trump has already violated the reimposed gag order with what he posted about Barr. That’s because the former attorney general could be a potential witness in the federal election interference case.
“It’s a simple order,” Cobb remarked.
Cobb went on to say that he thinks Trump will keep making such comments “until he provokes a penalty far greater than he’s suffered so far in the process.”
Trump has been fined $10,000 and $5,000 in his New York civil-fraud case for comments he’s made.
Cobb said he thinks Judge Chutkan will eventually impose that harsher penalty — as in jail time — on Trump. “I think it will take that to stop him” from continuing to violate the gag order, Cobb said.
